About the Department


The Department of English at Jagat Taran Girls' Degree College was one of the initial units that came into existence along with the formation of the college in 1975. Ms. Irene Bob was the first faculty members of the college though she soon left to join the Department of English and MEL at the University's Main Campus. Dr Ratna Bhattacharya's joned n 1978 and her position as Assistant Professor was confirmed in 1979. She not only single-handedly managed the Department but also led it gracefully to obtain  an ‘A’ Grade under the CPE Phase II in 2011.
The Department held short term courses in Spoken English and also received grants from UGC to run career oriented Add on certificate course on Functional English and Translation Proficiency from 2017 to 2019.
The department also brought out a chapbook called Creative Forum that carried creative writings, poems and stories of the budding poets and thinkers of the department.
Students’ seminars, film screenings, debates and paper presentation, self-composed Poetry Recitation etc. are regularly organized by the department to provide a platform to the students.
Over the years, the alumni of the Department have reached to pinnacles of success in both their public carriers as professors, translators, teachers civil servants and social workers and well as their personal and domestic fronts.
